PDD works with Ocean Signal to create the world’s smallest personal locating AIS Man OverBoard device with integrated DSC

21/01/2015

Ocean Signal, a company well-respected for marine rescue and communication devices, approached PDD because of our long-standing marine and rugged expertise and asked us to help design the MOB1 rescue device using the new AIS (Automatic Identification System).

One of the greatest dangers still facing sailors is falling overboard in adverse weather conditions and at night when they are quickly lost in waves, spray and the dark. The best chance of rapid life-saving rescue comes from their own vessel, so their fellow crew needs to be aware of the incident and their precise location.

PDD researched the design and operation of lifejackets and conceived a patented trigger mechanism and casework design that is 30% smaller than the competition.

The MOB1 is compatible with even the most compact inflatable life-jackets and will activate automatically on lifejacket inflation transmitting a distress call and GPS position. It also features integrated DSC (Digital Selective Calling) to raise the alarm on the boat’s radio and a strobe light for extra visibility in poor light. It will withstand the rigours of outdoor use in standby mode for 7 years.

Graham Lacy, PDD’s Technical Director, a keen yachtsman and involved throughout its development says “I’ll be happy to be wearing one of these at all times on the water and can now justify having an AIS system on-board.”

The product has been featured in many sailing magazines and websites and is fitted in Spinlock and ISP lifejackets. More information is available at www.oceansignal.com
